Contact lens Consultation
Having a dedicated contact lens consultation is key to getting the best contact lens fit for comfortable all-day wear, while also ensuring the best match for your lifestyle and prescription needs.Contact lenses offer hundreds of thousands of Australians greater freedom and control over their eyesight and their appearance in daily life. Contact lenses also have numerous preferred benefits, such as not fogging up or succumbing to conditions like rain or mud, not posing a risk of being knocked off or broken during sports, helping reduce distortions at the edge of your vision by removing the need for frames, and being generally undetectable - allowing you to have full control over your appearance at work or when you’re out and about.
Contact Lens Consultation
For those new to wearing contact lenses, it’s often a surprise to learn that there are a lot of factors that go into choosing the best contact lens for you - and that the right one for you may be very different to that of a family member or friend. During your consultation, our eye care professionals will conduct a series of tests, while discussing your lifestyle preferences. This helps ensure that your lenses not only contain the right prescription, but also match things like the curvature of your cornea (the clear surface at the front of your eye) and any conditions you may suffer from like having dry eyes.
Contact lens prescriptions often differ from glasses prescriptions, hence the need for a dedicated consultation. During your appointment, your optometrist will also guide you on how to maintain good contact lens hygiene to best support the health and comfort of your eyes, while ensuring you get the most wear out of each pair of contact lenses, whichever type you choose.
Types Of Contact Lenses
During your consultation, your eye care professional will discuss with you the various types of contact lenses that we have available and which ones will best meet your needs. You’ll also have a wearing-in period where you get used to your lenses and ensure they’re going to be comfortable for you and won’t irritate your eyes. Options for the types of contact lenses include:
- Daily disposable lenses, which are ideal for travelling as there are no cleaning solutions to pack, or for those who have hay fever or allergies and find relief from a fresh lens every day
- Monthly disposable lenses which can be worn every day for up to a month, offering better value as you only only need 12 pairs each year
- Continuous wear lenses which can be re-used for an extended period of time
- Bifocal or multifocal contact lenses which can accommodate different prescriptions within one lens - help you switch focus from close vision to distant in an instant
- Toric contact lenses for astigmatism - to suit cases where the lens of the eye is slightly oval-shaped
- Silicone hydrogel lenses that can be worn during the day and into the night without needing to take them out for sleep
- Coloured lenses that can enhance the natural beauty of your eyes with depth and definition, or allow you to try any colour on the spectrum, from bright blue to warm brown
Once your contact lenses have been fitted and both you and your optometrist are happy with their fit and comfort, you’ll be all set to either alternate their use with your glasses, or wear contact lenses exclusively. Important tips to remember include:
- Always wash and dry your hands thoroughly when touching your contact lenses or your eyes.
- For reusable contact lenses such as the monthly disposable lenses, always store them in fresh contact lens solution when they’re not in your eyes. Do not clean them or store them with water or anything else.
- Keep your nails trimmed - contact lenses can tear from sharp nails or from coming in contact with other sharp objects.
- Strictly stay within the recommended time frames for both contact lenses and contact lens solution. Doing so can cause irritation to your eyes.
- Remove your contact lenses if your eyes become sore or irritated, and return to your optometrist.
- Attend any follow-up appointments as scheduled by your Stacey & Stacey eye care team. These appointments are to ensure your eye health is optimised and maintained, so we can best support you in maintaining lifelong eye health.
