Retinal Photography
Retinal photography is a simple, painless and easy way that our eye care professionals at Stacey & Stacey can capture detailed, high-resolution images of the inside of your eye during an eye exam. Specifically, we want to look at the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye, as well as the optic nerve and the blood vessels in the eye.The images captured by retinal photography can be used to identify and diagnose various eye diseases, including:
- Age-related macular degeneration: a common condition that affects the central part of the retina and can cause vision loss.
- Diabetic retinopathy: a condition that affects people with diabetes and can cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina.
- Glaucoma: a group of eye conditions that can cause damage to the optic nerve and lead to vision loss.
- Retinal detachment: this is where the retina becomes separated from the layer of blood vessels that provides it with nutrients and oxygen.
- Macular holes: this is where a small hole can develop in the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision.
- Vitreous detachment: this is a condition in which the vitreous, a gel-like substance that fills the middle of the eye, becomes separated from the retina.
- Retinal vein or artery occlusion: this is where the veins that carry blood away from the retina, or the arteries that bring blood to the retina, become blocked.
You don’t need to book a separate appointment for retinal photography - it will be included as part of your annual eye test with us. From the results of this testing, your eye care professionals will be able to identify the start of any eye diseases early, monitor your eye conditions over time to check their progress and the efforts of any treatment being carried out, improve the diagnostic process, guide management and treatment decisions, and ultimately help you get the very best outcomes for your long-term eye health.
